Buster

From the time our daughter was five years old she wanted a puppy. I resisted, stating that a dog needs room to run, and our nice little spot in Grandview wasn’t enough space for a dog. We moved out of town to a great new place with less traffic, a big fenced in backyard, and plenty of space to run and play. The moment the doors on the moving truck closed, she looked up at me and asked, “Can we get a dog now?”

Family back home in Southeast Ohio knew we were on the search, and called two weeks later. They had a litter of pups on a farm, and the mother was dry. My wife had plans to be down home with the kids the following weekend, so they stopped by to see the litter.

One, flea ridden puppy stood out to them, they brought him home, and our girl named him Buster. We cleaned him up and he hardly took a step for two weeks because she carried him around all day. He grew up with her and our son. He had tons of love, and when she stopped carrying him everywhere, plenty of room to run.

 

As kids will do, ours got into interests as they grew, and were on the go, eventually going off to college and beyond. Buster and I read the writing on the wall early, and became close friends,… as dogs and parents will do.

 

The time came when his body couldn’t keep up with his spirit, and all the room in the backyard didn’t matter anymore. All these years later, the priority of room to run was replaced with loving care, and a hard decision. Thankfully, Kona’s Loving Paws was there to take the call. The service they delivered, with compassion and kindness is a blessing. It made an unbearable situation bearable.

 

Buster was loved as much as any dog has ever been loved. And we are richer than we deserve for having him in our lives. Sharp, keen-eyed, loyal, and kind, he lived a good dog’s life here with us. But even though he’s gone, and our hearts are broken, I can smile because now he has plenty of room to run.
